Over the next few months, at least as the new Mrs. Hargrave was concerned, their life at 1098 Thirteenth Street South, in an apartment owned by Frank and Kate Strong, was as happy as any new couple’s. The apartment was furnished with a dining table and chairs, a full bedroom, and a small sitting room. Mrs. Strong was delighted to have rented the rooms to people of such obvious refinement as the Hargraves. It would mean less work for herself, and that was a relief. Her husband Frank had taken ill and was being treated by a doctor, a fasting specialist named Linda Burfield.

And though the doctor made frequent visits to the Strongs’, neither Mr. or Mrs. Hargrave had the occasion to see her. At least neither said so. They were far too involved with their new life together. When away on business at Fairbault, Minnesota, that June, Sam wrote to his bride.
